Israel's Netanyahu calls for referendum on pullout plan

JERUSALEM, Sept. 13 (Xinhuanet) -- Israeli Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday called for a "quick referendum" on Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's disengagement plan.

Speaking to reporters, Netanyahu said he was worried about the increasing concerns over the possible outbreak of a civil war following calls for soldiers, policemen and reservists to refuse orders to evacuate settlements.

The finance minister said he believed a quick referendum would prevent a major rift in the country and the Knesset (parliament) must immediately draft a legislation to enable such a referendum.

He suggested that the vote should take no longer than six weeks.

Sharon has planned to evacuate all 21 Jewish settlements from the Gaza Strip and four other isolated enclaves in the northern West Bank by the end of next year and Israeli troops would also be pulled out from the areas.

Local newspaper Ha'aretz reported Sunday that Israeli settler leaders and council heads were considering calling on those carrying out the evacuation to disobey orders and settlers to resist the evacuation.

Tens of thousands of settlers and their supporters rallied on Sunday night in downtown Jerusalem against the pullout plan, calling Sharon a "dictator" and demanding that the pro-settler National Religious Party (NPR) quit the coalition to bring down the government.

Later on Monday, the central committee of the NPR party was to debate on wether to quit the coalition over disputes on this issue with the ruling Likud party.
