Nadine, I should like to respond to your question what is Liberalism all about.

This is my take:

Liberal: Not limited to or by established traditional or authoritarian attitudes: free from bigotry. Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, broad- minded .Tending to give freely, generous.(American Heritage Dictionary)...

The following initiatives were brought to you by Liberal Democrats:
Democratic President Wilson: sponsored labor and child welfare laws, the basis of workplace safety and wage equity legislation..
President FDR brought electricity to Appalachia..where I currently reside...established the WPA and CCC ( which angered my Republican parents I might add ) but it built the Blue Ridge Parkway (which many of us enjoy driving today )and other structures still in use. Also brought us Social Security..and wise and strong leadership in WW II.
And some of the finest art work ever done was on the roof of Grand Central Station by workers in these movements.

President Truman brought WWII to a conclusion. He established the Marshall Plan that led to Democracy in Germany and Japan... NATO and the Truman Doctrine to protect us from communism.

Kennedy's accomplishments were the Peace Corps, manned Space Flight and a ban against the testing of nuclear weapons.

President Johnson championed the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts, Medicare, Medicaid, Head Start, Upward Bound and the Higher Education Act of 1965.... the beginning of most federal student loan programs.

Clinton, presided over the LONGEST ECONOMIC EXPANSION IN THE US HISTORY.. His term began with a budget deficit and ended with a Treasury Surplus. The Deficit Reduction Act of 1993 pased the Congress without a single Republican vote.
Unemployment was at the lowest level in a decade;Poverty and crime levels the lowest in a generation. The war to end the ethnic cleansing in Kosovo was won without losing a single American life.

Now, can you tell me what is so terrible about Liberalism.
It has brought this Country many social reforms and for the most part has allowed the majority of Americans to live better lives.
