but it does show that 'security guarantees' of and by their ownselves don't mean that much

Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.

and i think when the same nation gives one, then uses for justification the fact that it is backing up its own guarantee, it's pretty self-manufactured stuff

That doesn't make any sense. I'm not even saying its wrong, I'm saying it doesn't make enough sense to be labeled right or wrong.

you have casus belli or you don't, your case for war stands or falls on its own merits, and any guarantee is just part of the diplomatic forms involved

Casus Belli is the fact that the North attacked the South.

'Don't start up wars you can't win'

I don't know about the can't win part. Eventually it became can't win, but I don't think it was a forgone conclusion. That it wouldn't be easy should have been understood from the beginning, and I think a lot of supporters of the war didn't understand this.

also, remember that wars go better with allies that share your goals and burden and responsibility .... there's some parallels to Iraq right there

Going to war "with allies that share your goals and burden and responsibility" does describe the situation in Iraq. We have the biggest burden because we have the most ability to handle the burden and because we were the prime movers behind starting the war but the goals and burden and responsibility are shared.
