"In less than a day, a right-wing blog known as powerline.com made claims -- we suspect with the intention to deceive right-wing rubes who lap up every little bit of misinformation that turns up on the Internet that will reinforce their unquestioning worship of George Bush Jr. and/or their hatred of John F. Kerry -- that the documents must be a "fraud" because supposedly no typewriter in the early 1970s could create such a document and the signature on one did not look exactly the same as that on another.

We were not surprised when the cable "news" (snort) channels lapped up this silly, speculative, unscientific rumormongering on Thursday. We were not even surprised when the political reporter on CBS' local affiliate, one Marcia Kramer, parroted the claims on the Thursday 6 PM news while pretty much ignoring the debunking that Internet bloggers and journalists had begun on the specious, unsupported claims. And mere minutes later, Dan Rather made Kramer look like the chump she has become when he not only stood behind the integrity of the 60 Minutes II report but added new, damning details and stuck to the questions that remain even if the two documents in question are not authentic: why did then-Lieutenent Bush disobey the direct order of a superior officer and refuse to take a mandated physical examination?"
