Quit slumming... and check this out, will ya?

LOL
I just looked at my files.

1. None of my citations are italicized. But I'm not sure that the fact Kerry's is is important.

2. This is more important imo. Nobody sends award citations to a printer. All of mine from the 60s, 70s and 80s are typed. In combat units awards are...well awards. The citation is not considered nearly as important by the troops as the medal and the award ceremony. Guys stand tall after the ceremony with gleaming medals pinned to their chests and their buddies heartily congratulate them. Nobody asks to see the citation. The citation gets placed in a file. The medal is carefully cared for (or sent home), and at the first opportunity, the soldier goes to a PX to change his ribbon bars.

The only two things that I recall being printed on presses in Vietnam were the daily Stars and Stripes newspaper and the monthly Green Beret magazine. I'm sure other units had their publications too. These were printed because so many copies were needed. In 20 years active duty, I never heard of an award citation being typeset. None of mine were. I have all of my citations in a file on my desk as I type this.

I believe Kerry got the SS award. That will override a lot of questions about the first citation. I do believe that the 2nd and 3rd citations for the SS are terribly important as is the non-existent SS with Combat "V" listed on his DD-214.

The combat "V" is an unauthorized embellishment. It could be overlooked as a typo if so many other unauthorized embellishments were not present. It is clear to me and my belief that Kerry manipulated his military record without authorization to make himself look better and/or to hide certain actions he was wrongly credited with in the first citation from future scrutiny.

Most important are the citation changes. The changes between all three versions are quite significant. Approximately 170 word are deleted from the 1st version for the second. Pg 82 of Unfit For Command describes what likely happened and explains why Kerry felt he had to modify the original citation because it was false. A US Army soldier named Doug Reese (pro-Kerry BTW) was the real hero that day.

The third citation is even more remarkable. This time heroic words and embellishments that match neither the first or second citations are added.

I also find most striking the fact that none of the three Kerry SS citations are dated. I have every citation for every award given to me over 20 years active service from Feb 62-Mar 82, including 11 years overseas. I have 13 combat awards and many non-combat commendation and Meritorious Service medals. Every Citation is dated.

As far as I'm concerned all three of Kerry's SS citations are suspect. Perhaps the descrepencies explain why the US Navy has opened an investigation.

But investigation or not. All war veterans know that three different citations for the same award means at least two are phony. When this was first announced, I immediately posted that this spells the end for the Kerry campaign even though he was ahead in most polls at the time.

I believe the precipitous drop in polls being experienced by Kerry comes from veterans. Before the three citations were brought to light, Vets were split 50-50. Over the weekend, I read the Vet polls indicate 80-20 pro-Bush.

Kerry may recover, but he won't get it by explaining the SS citations to Veterans. Kerry needs big help. He needs a life preserver.
