HSDPA is simply an evolution and extension of the 3GPP 3GSM UMTS standard, and it us fully backward compatible with 3GPP GSM GPRS/EGPRS, just as 1xEV-DV is a part of the CDMA2000 standard and is fully backward compatible with 1xRTT and IS-95 A/B. - Eric -
