Interesting Quote on TD-SCDMA ...

... or at least one variant of same:

China is trying to create a variant called TD-SCDMA. UMTS (3G) is not as patent-friendly as GSM is. Some Qualcomm patents still apply because you are using CDMA technology in the first layer. If you pick up a few tricks from GSM's Layer 1 and put it into CDMA's Layer 1m, then you get TD-SCDMA that allows you to bypass Qualcomm patents. Sasken partners with key Chinese companies that drive this — both on the handset and network sides. The stack we designed is only for the China market. You still don't know which one is going to win. China is also looking at a variant of UMTS called Low chip rate (LCR). They encourage competition between government departments. We are working with both. - Milind Gandhe, GM of Strategic Planning, Sasken Communications -
