Development today is much cleaner. Countries that developed before were much dirtier and had to pollute, grow and then clean up.
But cleanness cannot be a condition since qua non for developing. Otherwise people will end up eating the landscape like they do in Wyoming.

I can recall when people start opening new agricultural fronts here in Brazil in the wake of lousy economic policies of the military.

They were doing that not because they loved it. They were doing to keep themselves alive. The reason was:

Industry had always take on the reserve army freed by the agricultural sector. Without economic growth -the debt crisis was raging then- there was no industrial activity to take them. And there was Reagan and Paul Volker with double digit interest rates.

But try to link interest rate to trees falling. It goes way beyond the capacity of the average guy to comprehend
