The biggest problem is the same problem as with Vietnam. LBJ got suckered into the wrong war at the wrong time, with no way to pull back politically. Long after it was obvious that the war was not winnable, he kept pouring in troops and escalating the bombing in the North, because he had no choice. Did I say no choice? Well, he had no choice if he was to save his political future, but he certainly had other choices.

Bush is in the same...quagmire. What may be good for the situation will not be good for his political career.

What absolutely terrifies me is what might happen if he wins. He may throw all the neocons out on their ear, and actually start listening to Powell. Or, he may continue with this 'slow death' scenerio. Or, he may choose the disaster scenerio: with nothing to lose, he may unlease the neocons on Iraq to 'prove' that they were right all along, attempting to crush the insurgency and turning a quagmire into a true Jihad.
