Sun may make Opteron based notebook
By INQUIRER staff: Thursday 16 September 2004, 14:26
(http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=18495)

From the article:"...A SERIES OF questions and answers on the Sun Microsystems website suggests that the firm may make Opteron based laptops.

The PDF, based on a Sun Expert Exchange, also outlines a heap more information about Solaris and Opteron support, including its plans to support iSCSI with Solaris 10, and how it will submit benchmarks for its Opteron based machines.

The firm also said that all Sun Opteron systems are certified to run Windows too, and there's a promotion in place for such machines.

Sun will also support mixed CPU configurations including Opteron, SPARC and Intel. While Sun has discussed eight way Opteron based SMP machines supporting 32-64GB of memory, it hasn't made any specific product announcements.

Sun and AMD are working "very closely" on multicore CPUs for servers and workstations, and will license per physical processor or socket for multicore CPUs.

The PDF said that Sun influences AMD's roadmap, co-develop on software and the relationship extends to the highest levels of the company. Unlike HP and IBM, Sun has an operating system and complete software suite it is optimising for the Opteron.

But the document says there's no "religious" antagonism to Intel's Nocona, and Sun evaluates which chips provide the best performance for its customers...."

==================================================

No mention of any Intel processors. I wonder if after Opteron is optimized for Solaris if Sunw will approach Intel for them to get on board too?
