Perhaps this will help: If Taiwan is truly independent and is truly able to do as it pleases because it is truly not under the control of Beijing, and if Taiwan truly wants to be an independent country, then Taiwan should be able to say "we are independent". But they can't, because if they do, they are dead. It is that simple. Taiwan, today, is under the control of Beijing, and is, and is broadly and widely understood by all interested parties to be, an inseparable part of China.
