It seems to me the Bushies are doing their best to hide the facts about how badly the war in Iraq is proceeding until after the election.

I see parallels between the Iraq War and the Vietnam War.
But there is one feature in the Iraq War which is worrisome, and that is the fanaticism of the Moslems in general and of the Jihadists in particular. This fanaticism is far worse than the nationalism of the Vietcong and the North Vietnamese because it is a religious fanaticism, a fanaticism which strengthens immeasurably their will to resist and to die fearlessly.

As I wrote yesterday, victory for the Americans is still possible but the costs and casualties will be so prohibitively high that it would be a pyrrhic victory. If Americans are willing to stomach all the consequences, it is OK to go on fighting, I suppose.

However, I suspect that in any peace deal where fanatic Moslems are involved, it would be a non-peace deal, and fighting and killing will flare up again from time to time. Then one will begin to worry and wonder whether it was all worth it to begin with.

BTW, there is a saying in northern India: "Never offend an Afghan. You will live to regret it as he is relentless, subtle and merciless in his revenge, and he is more dangerous than the cobra."
