Well, I wouldn't quite put it that way.

If the country is going to hell, it is because politics are. In the past, there were plenty of dirty tricks in politics. But, in today's instant communication world, these same politics get exposed to all voters ad nauseum. It has two effects: makes voters angry, usually at each other; turns voters off, as they conclude that all politicians are crooks.

My opinion is that McCain had an opportunity to break this cycle by denouncing the Rove tactics openly. But, he took the low road, too, and now we'll just have to wait for that as yet unfound statesman...
