John, you missed my point entirely. We were talking about terrorism in the U.S. The reason why we weren't actively targeted like in Paris and London in the 70's is because the terrorists eyes were not riveted on us back then like it is today. They started targeting us because of Osama. He was extraordinarily successful in funneling international terrorism in a way to aim it directly at us. Then of course, once the Arabs started hating us, then it became easy to start blaming us for all of their problems.

I'm on record here saying that this war in Iraq needs an exit strategy. So your questions at the end of your post are the same questions I've been asking everyone around me. We can't afford this strategy long term.

But my whole point in the previous posts have been to point out that whether or not Bush's strategy will work in the long run, it sure as hell has disrupted terrorist aims at striking the U.S. in the short run.

If you think that terrorists aren't targeting us in the run up to this election right now, then you must be naive. They are trying everything in the book, but we've had time to prepare since 9/11, and I believe the Iraq distraction is not just a distraction to the U.S., but it is also a distraction to all those terrorists (yes, all 20K of them), who are engaged in the turkey shoot over there instead of getting recruited to come over here. End of story. JMHO.
