I am occupying a modest house in Bethesda, MD.

The metaphysics of national sovereignty is interesting, of course, but I doubt that the land of the Southwest and California is any more Mexican than Mexico is Spanish. Even if the Mexican American war were unjust, it was no more so than the original conquest of Mexico from the Aztecs and Mayans, and no one is suggesting unringing that bell. But more than that, ownership of the Southwest and California belongs, now, to the population which has made it productive and made it home. There is no adequate ground to dispossess them, and they want to be part of the United States.
