My daily carpe,
I never thought I would sees the day
when my favourite motto was in print this way.

The Wintel attempt to escape into a proprietory chip carrier may be as doomed as IBM's attempt to wrest control of the bus away from
the ISA(Industry Standard Architecture) when it had no real advantage. All those who went that path lost $ bigtime.
IBM was already a bit player and it was a last gasp which lost. Intel is the major player, and will certainly cause a major fork in the road. However the final analysis is whether or not the machine runs on the Gatescode highway, and not Intels funny little strategy. As long as there is a Gatescode standard, then AMD and others will be able to live under its umbrella(it would help if they pick a standard socket) Of course Intel will come out with chips with 500 pins to derail and fragment this attempt at a standard, to force their proprietory carriers and their descendants. One hopes AMD et all will behave logically.
Intels attempt to destroy AMD with price is doomed as AMD has 5% of their share and they throw away $20 for every $1 of AMD's they throw away. However for strategic reasone they may decide to do this.
The foundry partner concept is valid and even now AMD sells all it makes and looks for foundry space. Just the beginning of the great sharing that Intel has to face.
