"In any Serif font they can be. Genius. " Umm, let's see. A lowercase 't' usually curls at the bottom and there is the crossbar near the top. A lowercase 'h', with or without a serif, is pretty much a vertical line on the part that faces the 't'. Seems like there are limited opportunities for kerning. But, okay...
