They did during the early years. NG was cheap and energy wasn't a concern, pollution was.

Side note. There was a plant in this area run by Northern Gas in the 40s. It got Natural Gas from coal. It was shut down after about 10 years. Recently someone wanted to develop the area. Big toxic clean up to get rid of the tars.
