This is the all important poll. And pegged to this number is the famous question Ronald Reagan asked:

Are you better off today than you were 4 years ago. It is time Kerry starts to say this too.

September 18, 2004--Forty-two percent (42%) of American voters believe things in this country are generally going in the right direction. That's up slightly from 40% a week ago.

A Rasmussen Reports survey found that 54% now believe that things have gotten off on the wrong track.

Data released right after the Republican National Convention showed that 44% thought the country was heading in the right direction at that time. That is the high water mark for 2004.

Before the Republican National Convention, just 39% said things were going in the right direction and 58% disagreed.

This basic measure of voter contentment will be updated every Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time on the public site. It is updated daily for Premium Members.

Seventy-two percent (72%) of Republicans say the country is heading in the right direction. That view is shared by 17% of Democrats and 38% of unaffiliated voters.

In the 16-Battleground States that are likely to determine the outcome of Election 2004, 40% say the country is heading in the Right Direction.
