I think in an overall discussion of the past, Bush loses. There is simply no comparison between the two when they were younger. Kerry was an excellent student, head of the liberal political group at Yale, war hero, idealist antiwar protester who was feared and respected by even Nixon. Bush was a poor student, got into both the Guard and Yale with influence, drank heavily, possibly did drugs, and pretty much floated around aimlessly as a youth.

Of course it's better for Bush to forget the past. But, that's beside the point. The past has been done, people now realize the strengths and weaknesses of the candidate's pasts, and now it is HIGH time to talk about real problems.
