BOTHELL, Wash., Sept. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Lumera Corporation, (Nasdaq: LMRA - News), was recognized as one of the leading nanotechnology companies in North America when the company was added to Merrill Lynch's Nanotechnology Index on Friday September 17. Lumera was the only new addition to the index at this time.

Merrill Lynch's Nanotech Index is made up of 25 companies in this exciting new field. Lumera, which recently raised approximately $42 million in its initial public offering, was listed in the small cap and micro cap category of the index.

In its April report, Merrill Lynch indicated it believes nanotechnology could be the next growth innovation, similar in importance to information technology over the past 50 years.
Most recently, Lumera unveiled a molecularly engineered material that has an unprecedented electro-optic efficiency of more than five times that of crystalline materials widely in use today. Because this revolutionary new polymer can respond to very low voltages and modulates and transmits light at extremely fast speeds with minimal loss, it offers the potential for a variety of high-speed optical networking components. These components are expected to dramatically improve performance in much more compact packages than those currently available.
Lumera is also working with techniques to coat its electro-optic materials onto silicon wafers containing multiple integrated circuits. These proprietary techniques will create high-speed optical interconnections with the combination of low-voltage and low-optical loss that is critical to enabling such applications.
Lumera has recently received orders for engineering samples of devices using its materials from select large telecommunication and semi-conductor companies.
