I've known you enough to say that you are well read and travelled around the world. Rove was on record saying something to the effect that if somebody is well read and educated, they are unlikely to vote Republican.

I had coffee with a colleague this morning. She has a Ph.D., well read and travelled around the world. She is a very open minded person and a TRUE conservative. Naturally, a hardcore republican. I posed all issues with Bush, she is dismissive of all of them. She thought Bush's acceptance speech was great. She came across as very anti-Kerry - no valid reason. As you may already know, I am a conservative in many fiscal and social categories, may be not on religious lines. I told her that Bush is no friggin conservative. He is to the conservatives just like Osama is to Islam.

As we are about to leave, she concluded her assessment of Bush - she believes that Bush is an honest, god-fearing person who is very religious. Can't help but think that her bottomline is 'religion.'

My conclusion - if Bush wins, there is a lot to be concerned about. If you want to really understand who Bush, interpret most of what he says in the opposite sense.
"I am a uniter, not divider"
"Compassionate Conservatism"
"Islam is a religion for which I have deepest respect."
You get the idea.
