It really depends on what part of the market that your after. There is a large portion of signage that is strictly vinyl, while LFDP is taking some of vinyl's share from pop signage and banners. I will assume that you are familiar with the vinyl process (if you aren't, just holler).

For example, I make all my banners with vinyl applied to the banner itself (as do many shops) while LFDP can run a roll of banner material through the machine and then hem and grommet it. The whole vinyl process is very labor intensive and very limiting in terms of graphics/color capabilities. LFDP is currently on the expensive side because there is no competition out there (at least on a local basis).

Now that I really think about it, LFDP is taking the market away from vinyl, while the combination of the two (lfdp onto vinyl) will become a niche market because it requires expertise and labor. Another example - I recently saw a paper digital print applied to a substrate by means of an adhesive and then laminated. The finished product was much more appealing in terms of graphics/color and cost less to produce than a comparable vinyl sign.

The other day I read some incredible numbers about how full color graphics produced extremely favorable results in terms of how long the average person remembers the sign. I don't remember the actual statistics, but they were outstanding. Quick - close your eyes and remember the last billboard that you saw. Odds are that it had a full color graphic on it.

As for RGFX, they better have something up their sleeve because Print 97 is coming up here on the 3rd and LMTS has already announced that they will be showing off 3 new products and I think CalComp has their CrystalJET ready. CrystalJET could be an ace in the hole.
