Since you bring up Bob Dole lets discuss what a real wound is.

Please remind us how many days in the hospital John F Kerry spent as a result of his purple owie wounds? The number zero days in the hospital has been repeatedly published. Perhaps you have more authoritative, contradictory information.

Bob Dole spent so much time in rehabilitation that he met his first wife while she was his nurse. He has claimed to be offended by John Kerry's claim to be a war hero.

If you say that one can be awarded the purple heart for self inflicted wounds, you may be right. The rules may have been different during the great war than during Vietnam.

Perhaps what has been said was that during Vietnam, purple hearts could only be earned during engagements with the enemy. I am frequently wrong, perhaps this is an instance of that.

Kerry's diary, and the biography he authorized claim that he had not engaged the enemy when he earned his first purple owie.
