MM, Hydrogen and electricity are good ideas here. THey just need development.

They also need to be economically viable. It's hard to match up to the energy potential of fossil fuels.

Hybrid cars are a good start. Even some SUVs are getting hybrid-ized. The motivation here is that if you save 10% on a car guzzling 10 MPG, you'll save more gas overall than if you save 20% on a car sipping 30 MPG.
