"In regards to Saigon, its a figurative, not literal description of what went on there."

Look at TigerPaw's post. I apparently mixed those stories up with that photo of the Vietnamese lined up to get on that lonely helicopter. Should've checked.

During th 1980's I worked with a guy who was an officer in the Republic of Vietnam Army when things went to pieces. Their base was surrounded by the North Vietnamese. They quietly slipped out through the jungle one night and walked to the coast. They managed to get on a fishing boat and bumped around the South China Sea for about 6 months before they found a country that would allow them to land. He eventually made his way to the US where he worked as an electronics technician. It took him 10 years to get his wife and kids smuggled out to the US.

So yeah, I find it believable that many of the South Vietnamese were willing to do anything to get out. Anyone who worked with the Americans were not going to be treated well, and it was hard to avoid doing that. A lot of Vietnamese wound up on the Texas Gulf Coast, apparently the climate reminded them of home. I heard other stories very similar to the guy I worked with.
