The individualism of American culture is at odds with many cultures all over the world where the group takes a higher place in society than the individual. You are wrong to assert that the concept of personal liberty is THE basic, universally accepted standard of freedom. A country living under foreign military occupation cannot be called free. When the US is gone from Iraq, the first step towards freedom will have been taken -- they will be free from our foreign domination. What degree of individual liberty the Iraqis pursue for themselves through their own political process is not for us to say -- and not for us to know. It is up to them as a society -- that is what it means to be free. Iraqis are fighting for their freedom -- we should give it to them.
