UN: stony silence
Bush delivered a strong defense of freedom and democracy in the General Assembly yesterday. Allawi and Karzai listened as he pledged the United States’ continuing efforts to fight terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan and make those countries safe for free elections.
But the Assembly listened with stony silence. Suicide bombers are still wreaking havoc in Iraq and Afghanistan . Bombs hidden in cars and left on roadsides continue to kill men, women and children every day. Innocent hostages are captured, held, and brutally beheaded in front of cameras.

Bush is willing to do something to stop the continuing horror in Iraq and Afghanistan. He has been doing so for over three years. He has endangered his political future–perhaps even his life–to take a stand against this evil. But the delegates with stony faces, and the governments they represent, are not willing to lift a finger.

What does the UN really stand for in the year 2004? Is it democracy? Free elections? Human rights? Religious tolerance? The rule of law?

Or is it the right of member governments to watch in stony silence as heads are chopped off, bombs explode in front of private homes and police stations, elections are threatened, and more and more hostages are rounded up–and as the Secretary General calmly condemns the only credible effort to stop all this brutality as “illegal?”

What a joke......
