Gulf war #1 -- the US did nothing outside of the UN. Gulf war #2, the US acted on its own, completely outside the UN. Don't hide behind the UN as an excuse for this invasion -- the UN was clearly NOT in support of this invasion. Nor is the UN just an extension of the US as you suggest in your description of Gulf war #1. If the US invades Iraq it needs a reason, independent of the UN, that provides an actionable cause -- and we had none, absolutely none.
