Actually, it is very likely that Burkett set himself up for humiliation, given that he's got a king-sized axe to grind with Bush.

You contradict yourself. A king-sized axe calls for caution and craftyness, not a sudden rash writup of memos on his home PC. I have no doubt that Burkett wanted to get these memos out to hurt Bush, but that only leads to the conclusion that he must have thought they would accomplish that task, which they would only do if he thought they were genuine.
