Looking for a useful Java app,

I've been looking on the web for useful Java apps. I know they outnumber Activex 7 to 1 but I haven't been able to find a useful one. Hundreds of spinning clocks and fading graphics may be interesting for the programmer to write (?) but not much use to me. Any suggestions anyone?

And why is it that at download point for a lot of Java apps, I get choices of which version to download depending on operating system. I thought Java was supposed to be cross platform. The only multi platform bit about it seems to be that the Java apps for Win95/NT run on Windows 95 and NT. Is this just an optimisation thing or is it necessary to have a version for Solaris and a version for Windows?

Thanks in advance.
