Agreed, but in aligning themselves with Zarqawi and the other foreign terrorists, they have made themselves no better than the terrorists and must now be eliminated or neutralized to give the rest of the Iraqis a chance at freedom. Of course, I think we should step back and let the Iraqi army do it to win their own independence instead of us doing it. The first test of this fledgeling new country is to take back all the cities that are currently being held by the insurgents. If they can do that, then they will be on their way. If they can't, then this whole experiment will fail.

Frankly, I don't think the commitment is there on the part of the Iraqis. I think democracy sounds interesting to them in theory but in practice they seem more concerned with making money and getting ahead.

The ME has had very little experience with democracy and progressive governments. The US, on the other hand, had considerable experience with democracy when it revolted against the king of England. For the Iraqis, I think its more of an abstraction than a reality.

If we pull out now, the insurgents will rule the country within the year. While I think that is the right way to go, the proponents of the American invasion would never abide by such a withdrawal. I think the withdrawal will have to be done in phases over a year's time. I still think in the end the country will fall to the insurgents but I suspect the phased withdrawal will be more palatable to the hawks.
