The Power supply business has heard claims of impending obsolescence time and again. The bottom line is that the lowest cost, highest quality supplier wins....... 5% of the market, leaving plenty for everyone else. VICR manufactures power supply building blocks! They do configure these into complete system 'front-ends' sometimes. but the bulk of their business is selling the 'bricks'. In order for a customer to use the bricks they've gotta get a power supply engineer- albeit a less experienced one-, power supply test equipment. and undertake all the shenanigans of Safety agency (UL marks) approval and designing it into their system. i.e. lots of overhead. the HP's and Cisco's of this world are good at what they do and usually do not desire to step into the mire of power supply design/qualification. VICR has a place though in many applications. Companies like Zytec do the whole enchilada. The customer says "I want a power supply in this odd-shaped space because thats all that's left, we need it with all worldwide Safety agency approvals in a few weeks, and costing very little". That is ZTEC's strength. they have developed a well oiled machine for churning out designs quickly and in custom form. This can and has been achieved with the Vicor building blocks. but the cost would be hard to match. Vicor may have some new technology but it is not going to radically change the playing field. Power supply technology lags the electronics business because of type of components used. Even if they have got to a point of buying and placing power semiconductors in chip form. They will not be the first. VICR and ZTEC are shining stars in this business, but for very different reasons. VICR has been noted for it's technology. ZTEC, for it's quality and customer focus. Vicor may be bringing in a new product line, but unless they get Baldrige/Deming like in their internal workings they will not be treading on Zytecs turf. CPRD is a company that runs in both parks. it does bricks and customs. So presumably Vicors 'superbricks' will dent CPRD's fenders.

Of course none of this explains the markets anomalous treatment of the above stocks!
