I think the analogy is a good one. Both Rather and the Administration were relying on folks below them to examine the facts.

In the case of the forged memos RE Bush there seemed to be disagreements amongst some of the experts.

In the case of the Niger intelligence, there were also disagreements about the authenticity. So much so that the CIA sent Wilson to investigate. He came back with the information that the story was bunk...yet Cheney and Bush still relied and retold the American people there was a grave threat..."We don't want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud".

It was earlier this year that we found out that the Niger documents were forged...and get this forged by a Frenchman...as was touted on this board and others as another reason to hate the French...even invade them.

This president has taken the country to war. When we examine the reasons that he used to make the case for war, the urgency in which the need for war was framed, The lack of development of a broad coalition...it's evident that he rushed into war without a thorough examination of the facts.

In other words...he was duped. Duped on a scale much grander than Rather was and with consequences much more severe. He rushed into war with no plan for the peace. We're seeing what a mistake that was now. Many military advisors said that war was not the right action needed. And many said that if you go to war in Iraq, you'll need nearly twice the troops that were deployed. Bush ignored these advisors. Fired some of them.

If we're going to fire anybody else for being duped, Bush Cheney lead the list. Rather blew it...no doubt. But at least he admitted he was wrong and apologized for it.

Bush says even if he knew then what he knows today he would have invaded Iraq....that's probably because they were drawing up war plans for Iraq...long before 9-11.
