Tom Friedman back for the first time since his sabbatical on IMUS right now. He says:
1. One chance left is january elections or shiaa will turn against occupation and then our goose is cooked and we will have to fight our way out. Our focus now is to pour in troops(especially iraqi) and money soon to secure election.
2. Sunnis will resist shiaa rule but kurds and shiaa together may be able to create reasonably stable situation. Civil war likely in any case--scope and size of war is what needs to be controlled. And there needs to be a legit iraqi govt alternative in that civil war or pure anarchy.
3. This is not nation building--it is nation creating. And its the first time its been tried and success is still not impossible if their is a legit iraqi side in the coming civil war against sunni terrorists and baathists.
4. 280 million arabs filed about 280 patents while HP files 1100?? per day--human talent disaster in arab world.
5. There is a war on terrorists but not on terrorism going on today as the mess in the arab world is not being addressed. We have to have arab partners in this. They have fatwas against salman rushdie but none against on 9/11 or zarquawi cutting off heads. There is a great moral crisis in the muslim world and a lack of courage.
6. Energy our curse and theirs as well. We have to take the oil hammer away from them. Iranians taking oil wealth and using it to keep power not to build a country. I guess hes talking conservation as well as new sources and exploration.
7. Iranians and Syrians afraid we leave the area. They want us there bleeding but there. Iraq cancer spreads to them. Regional powers like iran and turkey will move to secure there interests in iraq in some fashion.
8. Back to NYTimes a week from sunday
