Most handguns are inadequate for defense against grizzlies. A better strategy is to make a lot of noise. If that fails, then a large caliber rifle or shotgun slug is better than a handgun. Having said that, I often wished for my .44 when I was packing the .375 H&H up in Alaska. We were required to carry the rifle, but that quickly loses its glamour when you are trying to work at something that requires a lot of attention. A side-arm has its appeal. However, we were prevented from carrying them by agency policy.

Our best defense was knowing whether a bear was in the area. We were able to avoid most of them by a short fly-over the work area. If we saw one, we went elsewhere. Most people don't have that advantage, however.

Bears have a rightful place in their habitat; we're the interlopers. Hopefully, we avoid conflict whenever possible.

Very interesting story. Thanks!
