I am using a 17 wide screen and the window spreads everything all the way to the right. I'd be much happier if it only went maybe 14 inches.

The text will fill the window. Why don't you just resize the window to make it narrower. I prefer a newspaper column width for easier reading so I use about a third of the available width on my screen.
