If you are really concerned about server performance you could put the ignore list in the cookie and do client side processing (jscript) to redirect to the next message in the thread.

That would make ignore lists a "per machine" thing that the user would have to update on each machine they use which might not be a good thing but it does offload the processing to the browser.
