Was there no alternative available from your hosting site?
I've been waiting for mine (Verio) to offer Opteron-based servers for more than six months. They've promised me that they will have the Sun series (which is fine) soon, but, then, they've promised me other things in the past.
Per the salesperson, I'm not the only one asking for them.
I know I can get a colo solution (cheaper and much better performance, truth be told). On the other hand, there's a lot to be said for the guy on the other end having worked with 500 servers identical to yours, particularly if you ever get hacked on July 4th weekend, as I did in '03 (and Verio's part of NTT, so they didn't have the whole 2-week DDOS attack that knocked down a bunch of ISPs last winter.)
'Round about way of explaining why my server is still a dual P-III 933 mhz...
There is an upgrade path there, (to dual 1.7 ghz), but it's not that much of an improvement really, and won't get me any closer to allowing full-text search across 16,000-something books, which is what I need Opteron and lots of RAM for.
