Swift Boats or Swift Kicks?

Richard Mullenax

Over the past year, President George W. Bush has been attacked countless times by liberal smear websites such as MoveOn.org and Misleader.Org, most of them sponsored by financier George Soros. As a matter of fact, over sixty million dollars has gone into the smear tanks, hoping that ''Dubya'' will not sit in office for another four years.

The liberal smear organizations have called Bush a deserter and a misleader, and have even compared him to Adolph Hitler.

In response to the attacks, Bush has been said little or nothing about the smear and lies against him.

As closely connected as Bush's rival John Kerry is to MoveOn.Org, Bush doesn't blame Kerry for the attacks. But when a group called "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" put Kerry's war record into question, does Kerry go straight after the hawks like John O'Neill, the author of "Unfit for Command''? No, although Kerry threatened to sue television stations that air these ads. Instead of going after the veterans behind the ad, Kerry is gunning for George W. Bush, claiming that he is behind the attack ads.

To help Kerry's claim, Senator John McCain made a statement blaming Bush for the anti-Kerry ad, and asked Bush to condemn and apologize for it personally.

If Bush were actually behind the ads, it might be easy to agree with Kerry and McCain. But Bush is not responsible for the ads. The "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" and some of Bush's supporters are responsible. If Bush can tell the difference between smear groups apart from John Kerry, why can't Kerry tell the difference between "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" and Bush?

But I suppose that during the election season, truth doesn't matter very much for John Kerry. Not too long ago, Bush made a statement at his Crawford Ranch in Texas about the ads and asked that all soft money ads cease. But that isn't good enough for Kerry, because he needs to feel like a victim. He needs the people's pity.

The controversy from "Swift Boat Veteran for Truth" ad has turned into "Swift" kicks by John Kerry.

In spite of all the chaos, Kerry could be explaining his plans for making a stronger, smarter, and better America. But instead, he redundantly whines about how Bush is making up lies against him--of which Kerry has no proof.

Kerry could go after Bush on the economy, rambling about how Bush is sending U.S. corporations into foreign countries, and taking thousands of jobs away from the American people. But I guess another attack group would go after the Heinz cooperation, and "lie" about how the Kerrys own thirty-two factories in Europe and eighteen in Asia and the Pacific areas. But that isn't a lie is it? No, it is the truth, and something else Kerry knows very little about.

Kerry did well for a while by not joining in with the "Michael Moore crowd". But as time reveals, people show their true intention in the end. Shame on John Kerry for acting like a smear merchant.
