There are several free products you can run to check for spyware. MOST spyware is harmless but some can really reduce performance and others (such as Coll Web Shredder) can 'take over' your IE home page (and some are tought o get rid of).

Have a look at Ad-Aware at:

lavasoftusa.com

And Spybot at:

safer-networking.org

I use both of these and run them once a week or so to 'clean' out the system.
