I didn't give a damn about Afghanistan or the Taliban for that matter, except that they were on the way to getting bin Laden and the rest of al Qaeda. We should have done everything in our power to get those al Qaeda (short of nukes) swiftly and brutally. That would have made us significantly safer today, and would have sent a message.

I rhink you are missing a one point, which can partly explain your overall confusion. The fight of Jihadists vs. the civilized world may have started with Al Qaeda as an organizing force of the Jihadists, but it by no means ends there.

While I agree that we should kill as many of Al Qaeda members (and just about every armed Arab entering Iraq), doing so will not be the end of this.
