<Kerry has said if he can't pay for programs, he'll drop them.>

"Maybe the public doesn't want to hear it, ...maybe politicians think the American public can't understand the truth or hear the truth or bear the truth." This quote is from Mr Laurence Kotlikoff, economics chairman at Boston University. The context of these remarks is the gigantic fiscal gap which will open up as the "baby boomer" generation begins to collect their medicare, medicaid, and social security "benefits". Mr Kotlikoff estimates this gap to be $US 51 TRILLION. The estimate from the Brookings Institution is $US 60 TRILLION. The IMF's own estimate is a bit more optimistic. It comes in at $US 47 TRILLION. This particular fiscal gap, not to mention the entirely separate US budget deficits, trade and current account deficits, and all the other "unfunded liabilities", are playing no part whatsoever in the present political campaign. They are being mentioned by neither Bush nor Kerry.
