I think we have to step aside to a certain degree. We don't want to do what we did in Vietnam, which was to draw the nationalistic elements to the other side.

Stepping aside may involve eating some crow, making it seem to the Iraqi people that they've 'won'. That would fuel both their nationalistic feelings, and their desire to keep and maintain that freedom.

What do you think we need to do?

Btw: there was a story in the local paper a month or so ago about a survey in Iran that say that a large percentage of people (as I remember, 70+%) wanted closer ties with the US. So, I think the story was there, but the media didn't make a big deal of it because of all the other news stories.
