You don't understand the meaning of a "free fire zone." It merely meant that a member of the military could fire on anyone they perceived to be a threatening enemy. That makes great sense since the VietCong often hid behind women & children. Then as now the U.S.'s enemy was brutal & didn't observe simple rules of humanity. U.S. soldiers would be sitting ducks if they had to request permission everytime they felt their lives were in danger. "Free fire zone" meant they could shoot in self defense to save their own lives, without going through the chain of command for permission. Kerry is trying to deflect blame for the incident to someone else since he was not manning his post as captain of the swiftboat that night. When he fell while on that ski slope some mos ago, Kerry pointed to a secret service agent & said to the press "I don't fall...he made me fall down." Kerry's attempt to blame Gardner, the crewmember who served on his boat longer than any other(2 mos) is yet another attempt to pass the buck. The USA requires higher standards for it's chief exec...Kerry does not qualify.
