"If some of those Muslim religious leaders would step up and do their job, we could probably get this situation resolved. "

Sistani (an Iranian Shi'ite) stepped up when the situation looked beyond repair with the Shi'ite led insurgency. He convinced Al-Sadr that a political solution would be more likely to achieve his goals.

To the North we have Sunni extremists. Al-Qaida is organized by self appointed fundamental extremists like Bin Laudin and Al-Zarqawi. There are highly regarded Sunni Scholars (clerics) in Mecca (and else where) who could offer a fatawa to the people of Falujia. If it was to disarm the radical extremists would lose their support. I wonder why we don't hear anything about this from our diplomatic corps.
