Don't hide behind the UN as an excuse for this invasion

I'm not. I was going in an entirely different direction that didn't even hint at using the UN as an excuse. Do you really read the posts or do you just scan for certain phrases and post you favorite talking points in response?

Gulf war #1 -- the US did nothing outside of the UN.

Gulf War I wasn't a UN operation that we helped out in. It was primarily an American (or American and British) operation that had a UN fig leaf over it.

Nor is the UN just an extension of the US as you suggest in your description of Gulf war #1.

I suggested no such thing. The US was at war in gulf war one. In fact we were responsible for the war. The UN is not in general an extension of the US. It is however a convenient fig leaf to put over such operations when we can get other members to agree with it. This fig leaf has little real significance in most cases but it can help out just a little bit in getting certain people, groups, or countries to support invasions or other actions.

If the US invades Iraq it needs a reason, independent of the UN, that provides an actionable cause -- and we had none, absolutely none.

We were at war, we decided to stop the war not because of some statement or action by the Secretary General or a resolution by the Security Council but because of a cease fire agreement. The agreement may have been ratified by the UN but we were parties of it. Violate the agreement and there is nor more agreement to cease fire.
