OBE estimates $120 has been spent directly related to the War in Iraq - there has been another $87 billion authorized for post war activities including reconstruction efforts. That comes to over $200 Billion that are directly related to the war in Iraq.

As far as reconstruction is concerned, it is still unknown as to when Iraq will have water treatment and sewage plants back to prewar levels.

As far as the reconconstruction of Iraqi civil society is concerned (not infrastructure related) it is unknowable when Iraq will have civil security to the levels enjoyed during Saddam Hussein's brutal rule. Most Iraqi's had more security during Saddam Hussein's reign then they have now.

Personally, I am not against nation building in the ME. I would prefer it to be done in a transparent manner.

IMO the Bush administration is doing everything through the back door. There is a military draft going on right now through the back door. There is nation building in Iraq that is going on through the back door. They are fighting the war through the back door. If we are fighting a war in Iraq we should budget for it. It will cost more than $200 billion. If that is what it will take - so be it. But fight it openly - not through a back door.

I am not unalterably opposed to anything specifically. We can not be dogmatic. In many cases we have to do what we have to do for the best interests of our country.

IMO I do not think George W. Bush has the intellectual and emotional capabilities needed to deal with the problems we are faced with.

He does not have the capacity for hard work and intellectual discipline that is needed to lead us out of the mess we are in.

George Bush is not on the same page with his Secretary of State WRT international diplomacy.

George Bush's success is largely due to Neo Conservative support. But I am not certain that that is his own vision. I think, to his credit, he is allowing Karl Rove to keep him on message with regards to neo-conservative ideology to win re-election.

Personally, I am not unalterably opposed to Neo-Conservative views and vision for the stability of the ME.

In fact (and I am not advocating it) I believe John Kerry will be more genuinely and personally supportive of Neo-Conservative visions of stability for the ME than George Bush - but perhaps not as much as Wolfowitz, Feith, Kristol and the gang.
