CBS REFUSES TO RUN ANTI-RATHER ADS

[jim geraghty reporting]

This report indicates CBS has refused to air Doug Forrester's television commercials calling for Dan Rather to step down from the CBS Evening News.

Hmm. CBS is a private corporation, and thus has the rights to turn down advertising. (Otherwise, Tom Brokaw or Brit Hume could run ads during the CBS Evening News, saying, "Can you believe this blarney? Come on, switch the channel over to my newscast.")

On the other hand, those are public airwaves.

By this standard, could a television network refuse to run ads by one candidate or another, or one party or another?

Paging NR's legal minds...
