>>>Draft-dodger monument scrapped -- but not forgotten<<<<

Nelson Daily News

Wednesday, September 29, 2004

NELSON - The mayor of this picturesque community says the organizer of a controversial monument honouring draft dodgers has agreed to scrap the project, but the organizer says he's only agreed to consider another location for it.

Mayor Dave Elliott said Monday he spoke to Isaac Romano and Romano agreed the project has become a problem.

"He has agreed that he will withdraw the memorial," Elliott said. "He said that he is sorry that he has caused the City of Nelson all these problems. But he is going to withdraw the monument from the City of Nelson. Certainly if the city doesn't want it, he doesn't want to create any more controversy."

Romano did not return repeated phone calls, but late Monday issued a statement saying he hasn't given up on the project.

"The Our Way Home National Reunion organizing group will be looking broadly for the appropriate setting for the peace monument. It may or may not be located in Nelson." The monument has created a stir in Canada and the United States. The U.S. Fox television network also chimed in with outrage.
